One of the most powerful British steam locomotives ever built, 46233 Duchess of Sutherland, is due to steam through Pangbourne platform 1 (towards Didcot) with a charter special at about 0907 hrs on Tuesday 23rd November. Best place to se it is probably the Didcot end of platform 2, but remember to stay on the platform behind the yellow line.

Does anyone know if the Rememberance Parade is going ahead on Sunday 14th in the village? Does anyone have any details? I have scoured the internet and asked various sources but no one seems to know which is suprising as its the 100 year anniversary I believe. Many thanks.

A news item on the Pangbourne Parish Council website states that there will be no Remembrance Sunday parade in Pangbourne this year, only an outdoor service at St James' Church at 3 pm. So there will be no road closures in Pangbourne. Here in Whitchurch there will be a short Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial, for which the hill is closed to traffic from 10.45 to 11.00 am

I live in Herefordshire but my great grandfather, Stephen Sommers, was a coachman and groom living in Whitchurch Street, Whitchurch, in 1861. I am trying to obtain a copy of a pamphlet written by Robert Noble (date unknown) entitled 'The Manor Houses of Whitchurch' It is listed on Amazon books but is not available. Yes, we’ve had the same problem for the last couple of days and so have two of our neighbours. We’ve reported it to SSEN and there is now a van at the top of Muddy Lane. They say they have found a loose connection and that the power is likely to go off within the next hour and may remain off for about an hour while they fix it.

Hello village! So we’ve recently moved into Wellesley House at the top of the High Street (formerly the Royal Oak pub up until some point in the 50s). Kirsty & Hugh kindly left us some Francis Frith pics of the building in 1899 and 1955, and we have loads of interesting info in the deeds, but I was wondering if anyone might have any other pics / anecdotes about the place - pub or otherwise! Thanks everyone.

It’s a great shame that the new King Alfred’s Way cycling route uses the stretch of the Thames Path through Hartslock Woods. This tranquil and, in many places, narrow path seems to me to be completely unsuitable for increased usage by cyclists. It will also be to the detriment of walkers, for whom the Thames Path was originally designed.

I quite agree Geoff. I walked that path about 3 Saturdays ago in the morning - never again! The weather was very nice and lots of walkers were out too, but the cyclists were tearing along that path in groups of 3, 4, 5 etc and on the hill after Hartley steps at breakneck speed and no concern for anyone else. Avoid at the weekend is my advice.

According to my trusty ordnance survey map that section of path is a bridleway which entitles cyclists to cycle along it. Of course I would expect cyclists to slow down when passing pedestrians, as I do.

Lost pooch has been claimed. So important to have a collar and ID card. Very upset as the pooch was obviously not getting proper TLC. Why have a dog if you cannot look after it properly. Think twice before getting an adorable pup who may grow too big for you to manage. If you love dogs as much as I do, having been named the WOT dog whisperer, do what I do and walk dogs for people who may be working from home, or are incapacitated. The owners appreciate it and it gives you so much pleasure, getting out, walkIng, doggy socialising etc. Think before you regret it later. 🐕🐶 ,

Hello everyone - I have cots on offer - free to a good home. First one is a folding mothercare cot (and John Lewis mattress) that my parents bought 2 years ago for my daughter when she came over. It’s probably been used less than 10 times so is in amazing condition. Folds up so you can stash it under a bed. link The other one is a mamas and papas cot bed - been used by both my girls so in good used condition but has no mattress. It’s a bit like this one but has square rather than rounded ends: link Collection from Hillside.

Odd request, but does anyone know or have a connection to the Luce family, specifically R.W Luce who worked for the Manpower Division in post war Germany? I think his daughter may have been married to Eric Ewens who lived in the village up until sometime in the 1990's. It's with great sadness that I've had to take the difficult decision to step down from my volunteer role as Green Team coordinator due to some health issues. I was wondering if anyone else might be able to take on the role? It's a maximum of one hour a week of work (usually less), at the computer, with some walks/catch ups in the village. Organisation and communication make up most of the time. I couldn't agree more with Sally's sentiments. Alexa was very well suited for the role organising community led maintenance activities in the village. She also helped to establish community guardians for maintenance of many of the key Open Spaces in the Village. I've just spoken to SSE. There is a backlog of underground cable faults awaiting fixing ("because of Covid"). Priority is being given to those currently without power in the area, and as we have a generator we are not at the top of the queue. However, the generator has been in place longer than is usual so they expect to get to us this week to investigate and fix the fault.

The news report here (3/4/21) about the dead birds of prey is absolutely shocking. I was devastated to hear about it, especially being within our own parish where our local landowners and community take so much care of the environment. The death of a precious protected barn owl is the most upsetting for me. Like with so much of our wildlife, loss of suitable habitats and more extreme weather patterns, mean that their numbers are never guaranteed.

It used to have steps leading to into the mount. The doorway was blocked off when the flat was created but the steps remained, just leading to a wall. That's about as much as I can tell you but it was an integral part of the mount once upon a time.

He will be missed terribly Sad time following on so close to Tanya's death I think he'd lived in the village for about 40 years Leslie

Hi lovely people. We've been doing a clear out (who knew there would be more to clear out after last years lockdown clear out...!) We have a solid wood bookcase to give away, to anyone local for a socially distanced pick up from Hardwick Road. Let me know if you are interested or need a photo, size info etc. It's the bookcase in the foreground, not the one with books on behind...! There are also a few books and cook books that will be heading to the phone box book swap at the entrance to Manor Road this week!

Whoever was 'responsible' for the dog who left a very large deposit slap bang in the middle of the pavement outside Primrose Cottage this morning should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Adults and children are constantly walking along the High Street and could very easily have trodden in it. It's especially incomprehensible as there is a bin specifically for dog poo about twenty paces away on the corner of Hardwick Road (which is where I put it as soon as I saw it). If you can't clear up after your dog perhaps you should walk them 'off road' or ask yourself whether you should have a dog at all.

I saw a sneaky typed note on one of the windows of the toll booth yesterday, about six inches square that could be easily missed. So a £20 top up will only give 47 crossings not 54. There was no explanation for this increase, sneaky indeed!

I contacted the owner of the bridge company and they confirmed the understanding in the article Richard published that they are apparently allowed under the agreement approved by the Secretary of State to raise the rate for crossings for card holders from 40p to 45p. The Bridge Company says that it is to cover the minimum wage increase in the past year and there are no plans to raise it further for at least a year. The most they could raise it would be to 45p per crossing for card users which would be about 45 crossings for £20 instead of the new 47 crossings for £20 (or 50 previously). Beyond that, they would need further approval from the Secretary of State. 45p per crossing for card holders is meant to be the maximum amount until the 10 year limit from that last agreement is up in 2025. I realise that this impacts regular users of the bridge the most such as residents of the village, but at least we know it is a limited impact for at least the next 4-5 years. The full report is available here: link

I find the bridge company’s response interesting and somewhat disingenuous in its content. I don’t think Whitchurch residents will disagree. I may be wrong but, whatever the “reasons” behind their decisions, to give less than a few days notice of the increase and not to formally publish same via a web site or village web page is, in my humble opinion, a very bad business practice. Unfortunately we have to accept the increase but maybe it’s time to lobby the relevant council to buy the bridge. I don’t pretend to understand the complexity of such a procedure but to be forced to pay increasing amount for such a short crossing is a hard ‘pill’ to swallow.

The Henley Standard does a great job in covering local news. Long may it continue, when so many local newspapers have disappeared. They know they are most welcome to use material from this website, as in the case of the news item about the forthcoming road closure, which first appeared on our front page on 8th January. One advantage that a website has, of course, is that we can include links, in this case leading to the OCC statement and some colourful road maps!

I'm bemused by the PC's recent Statement. Government guidelines say that all outdoor sports facilities must close. Surely this is a "key point" for the Village Green and its facilities. Why hasn't it been addressed by the Statement please?

Laura, the official Govt guidance says that sports venues should be closed. Playgrounds and recreational areas are still allowed to be open and used in order that the permitted exercise can be undertaken. I am sure we the best will in the world no-one could describe a solitary goalpost in the middle of a muddy field as a sports venue !!! The Village Green is a recreational and open space for all to enjoy. Let's keep it that way.

The guidance clearly says all sports facilities must close. Yes, the Green, as an open space, should remain "open" but the football pitch should not if the guidance is to be followed. If the PC has decided not to comply with this guidance, they need to let the electorate know.

Laura, I attach the wording from the Govt website with reference to sporting activities. The final paragraph deals with informal sports and makes a point of mentioning a "kick about" specifically. It is clear from this Govt information that providing the correct social distancing is being followed then children are still allowed and indeed should be encouraged to kick a ball about, use the goalposts and exercise as set out below. Staying active is a vital weapon against COVID-19, which is why people will always be able to, and encouraged to, exercise even during periods of tough restrictions. People should try to ensure they exercise regularly in a way that suits them, as physical activity plays a vital role in both our physical and mental wellbeing. In this guidance, ‘organised sport’ refers to sport which is formally organised by a national governing body, club, public body, qualified instructor, company or charity, and which follows the sport’s national governing body’s guidance. For team sports and higher-risk activities, this guidance must be approved by government before the sport can resume. Restrictions and exemptions which apply to organised sport (such as training or playing a match with your local club) are a departure from the legal gathering limits which normally apply. Informal or self-organised sport (such as a kickabout with friends) is not covered, and can only take place within the legal gathering limits which otherwise apply

Thanks Nick but I wasn't referring to the guidelines for individuals. I am referring to the guidelines for facilities providers such as the PC, which state that all outdoor sports facilities must close. The Oxfordshire Association of Local Councils has confirmed that this includes football pitches and that nets and goalposts must be removed where possible, as it is here. Therefore the PC are not complying with all Covid Guidance and haven't let the village know they've made that decision.

I have discussed this situation with OALC and they fully support all of the actions we have taken as described in our recent statement. They state: "This situation is not clear cut. Central government guidance is just that - guidance which needs interpretation in each and every local situation. You know your village better than anyone and are capable of assessing the risk and the particular situation and finding an appropriate solution." I fully appreciate the seriousness of the recent coronavirus surge and we will continue to monitor the situation in the village and respond to changing government guidance as appropriate. Laura’s views are valid and well thought out, but the Parish Council is aware of a broad range of views from residents in the Village and our role is to consider all of these and make decisions we believe to be appropriate for the village as a whole. The actions we have taken are consistent with previous actions taken during the lockdown in the Spring and are fully compliant with the recent government guidance.

I agree with the OALC: it's up to the PC if they choose to follow, or not follow the guidance. However, the term "sports facilities" is defined in the dictionary as including sporting equipment, so the PC shouldn't be claiming they are being fully compliant when the national guidelines say "Outdoor sports facilities must also close”, yet the PC is keeping the football goalposts "open".

Just to update based on research I was doing on regulations for my own work; from a government page updated on the 13th Jan . "Outdoor sports venues must close. This includes sports grounds, tennis courts, golf courses and swimming pools. Parks or village greens that have freely accessible sports equipment (such as football goals) do not need to close." link

Hello, I recently completed my degree and while I am on a job hunt I thought perhaps I could make myself useful. I'm 22 and have an interest in teaching children in museums and archaeological contexts. I have experience with running workshops with children in a museum setting and tutored French in my highschool. I speak french fluently and could help tutor pupils of all age with French, English, literature or history online. I could also be available for baby sitting. If your child also has a passion for history and archaeology, I would be so happy to talk to them about it or prepare themed activites, as I have done in the past. If this is something which might interest you, please contact me and we could arrange a price. Thank you and have a nice day everyone, Sarah

Thinking of home-schoolers and wanting to develop online teaching skills... I am an experienced learning support teacher (Hornsby Diploma and, most recently, Level 5 Helen Arkell Diploma in SpLD - Dyslexia). I am looking for a KS1, 2 or 3 pupil who would benefit from working on phonics, reading, spelling, comprehension, maths and writing skills for two sessions per week. It would be ideal if they lived in Whitchurch (so I can deliver resources if necessary). I hold a DBS certificate, issued in October 2020. Whilst schools are closed, there will be no charge for my time; usually charged at £40 per hour. Please email me directly if this is of interest. Good luck with all the home-schooling!

On 14th December 2020 I received a large parcel sent via Parcelforce from an NW postcode. Inside was a black laptop carrying case. Inside this was a sophisticated stereo sound/mic mixer without any connecting leads and no paperwork whatsoever. On 30th December I received my monthly credit card on which there was a charge against my E-Bay account by Rosgabriell for the very same sound/mixer dated !st December. This was obviously a scam. My advice to anyone receiving a similar package is don't accept it as I foolishly did but immediately notify your banks and credit card companies and check the charges on their accounts (I did do that). In the meantime can anyone suggest what on earth I can do with this piece of kit?

CAROL SINGING ON CHRISTMAS EVE 3PM. I have not had much response to an online suggestion that we here in Whitchurch bring cheer during these difficult times and sing carols, either on our doorsteps or in the few open areas around the village, safely distancing and masked although some may not agree. So please get those carol sheets ready and raise our voices and bring joy to all. If you know anyone who may not have internet connections, please let the know about the carol singing. With anticipated thanks.

I have just seen Clare Balding walking up the High Street, with another couple and a dog. She was talking into her microphone so I didn't say hello! I assume it's for her Radio 4 programme 'Ramblings' and she is most likely doing part of the Thames Walk (not a good as it's raining so Whitchurch not at it's best!)

What a shame the carol singing at the Ferry Boat had to be cancelled, but probably a wise decision. However, let us bring some cheer to our village and in the safety of our gardens, doorsteps or big open areas, or walking the streets of Whitchurch (DISTANCING, OF COURSE), sing our hearts out on CHRISTMAS EVE. Let us bring joy to the the world, during these troubled times, especially to those who may be in isolation or are lonely. In order that children can be involved, maybe something during the day would be best. Please feel free to post a comment or suggestion on the WOT website. Musical accompaniment will be most welcome. Come on you budding musicians, especially children, get those musical instruments tuned up. I hope I can rely on our support.

Good Morning, I am a volunteer with the Commonwealth Wargrave Commission, and I recently discovered the following, and am trying to locate the headstone, if one exists, in commemoration of this poor lady. It seems that on 23 November 1940 a german aircraft dropped a stick of bombs on a house called Duttons at Goring on Thames, and the lady in the property at the time, Mrs Edith Gertrude Olive Fox, wife of John Fox, daughter of Henry Waits Sharp was killed. I would love to know where the property was, and whether or not a headstone in memorium still exists. The CWGC website tells me she is civilian war dead, and commemorated at Henley on Thames Rural District, but fails to tell me where this is. Any assistance much appreciated, regards Peter Eastman

My thanks to Hilary Jensen for the information received. As a consequence of further investigation, I have now identified the location of the property which sits on the Ridgeway in Goring. The original property is now long gone, however the border stone wall and wrought iron gate of the property are still clearly identified with the name of the house Duttons very legible. I am also in contact with Janet Hurst of the Goring Gap Historical Society who is going to take forward a suggestion for a memorial plaque, with a tentative view of marking the anniversary of Mrs Fox unfortunate demise next November. Thanks again to Hilary for pointing me in the right direction. Merry xmas to you all, stay safe, best regards Peter Eastman

Dear Mr Eastman - I was researching about our house (formerly 'Duttons', then 'Bird Place' and now 'Katauyak') and found your post. Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like any more information. We do not know where the memorial for Lady Fox is, but would be willing to consider some sort of plaque/memorial on the stone wall or somewhere appropriate. Though much of the house is new, the stone and some of the walls remain from the original house. Very best, Bryan Urbick
