I like the Tibetan Cherry tree that arrived unexpectedly in Eastfield Lane and I hope it thrives. I go past it nearly every day and for me it is a reminder of King Charles coronation. I hope the blossom will be single flowered to provide food for our pollinators.

News Archive Re Hazell and Jefferies. I am dismayed to read the piece on News Archive. What society do we live in where there is no free speech at a public meeting, where complainants fear retribution and write annonomously. Ian Reynolds deserves support and recognition for his reportage.

Hello. May we please express, through your message board, our deepest condolences upon hearing the sad news that Tim, Whitchurch Lock Keeper, has passed away. We liked him very much & he always made us laugh with his great sense of humour & his stories. He was always so helpful & many of the other 'boaters' that we have chatted to over the years have said the same. He truly loved the area & the people where he lived, especially The Thames River & he knew so much about it & the wildlife. He was a true River man who could fix anything, especially if 'that thing' contained the word 'boat'!!. He will be a hard act to follow as sadly there aren't so many people nowadays with the same practical hands on skills & knowledge of the job like Tim possessed. We will remember him always. Sending our sincere sympathies to his family & to all who knew him. Kindest Regards, C&D.

Hello.. we have been been renting in Whitchurch Hill since Jan 2022 and are still trying to find our 'forever home' to buy, having fallen completely in love with the village and surrounding area. We ideally need 4 bedrooms, and have 2 energetic boys aged 5 and 7 who would love a big garden! If you are thinking of selling in the next 6-12 months, we would be so grateful if you could please get in touch! Thank you, Caroline, Max, Alfie & Jack

I found two ticks on my dog last night. She’s only walked locally for the last two weeks and it’s the first time she’s picked up ticks in this area. These nasties can cause illness and seem to be spreading so do check your dogs and cats, and yourselves if you walk on the paths and trails around our beautiful village! If they have already bitten you don’t try to pull them off of cover with Vaseline, use a tick remover card or tick tweezers to minimise the risk of disease transmission.

Our dogs are 3 and 4 years old and have picked up ticks locally every year - I think it's early this year as one of mine had a tick 3 weeks ago. The no mow trend on the verges does not help but we need the wildflowers.

Does anyone know the owner of a silver Smart car Reg AM09BNJ, which has been parked on the high street for more than one month, and has not moved? An online check indicates it has not been reported as stolen. It is quite awkward parked where it is, as our driveway is very narrow and needs a big swing to get our car into and out of it. We would therefore be very grateful if the owner could park their car somewhere else. Many thanks.

What’s happening at The Ferryboat? My contact at Star Pubs says they are “doing work in preparation to re-trade the site”. I’m not quite sure what this means, but it must be good that the building is getting some attention and that they see it as an asset that needs to be maintained.

Do you have a (piano) keyboard you no longer need? I’m teaching piano to a very sweet little Ukrainian girl. She is doing brilliantly in lessons and making great progress despite the language difference. Unfortunately, though, she’s not able to practise as she doesn’t have a keyboard at home (and there’s no room for a real piano). Does anyone have a keyboard they no longer use that they’d be willing to donate? Ideally this would be 88 weighted (and working!) keys with a stand, stool and pedal, but the keyboard itself is the most important thing. I realise this is a lot to ask but the last thing I want to do is lumber her with something that makes learning more difficult and creates bad posture habits, etc. Thank you!

Hi all! The WotArts exhibition is almost upon us. The main exhibition is in the Village Hall on Saturday and Sunday 12th / 13th, and then online viewing for a couple of weeks from the 14th. If you have any comments about the event please add them as replies to this posting so we can see them all together.

Please could anyone advise if there will be a Remembrance Parade on Sunday 13th in Pangbourne? There are signs up in Reading Road saying the road will be closed 2-4pm but I cant find any other information. It was the same in past years before Covid. Usually everyone would meet at Pangbourne Police Station and go from there. Would like to take part again. Thank you.

Dear Karen, This is from the Pangbourne Parish Clerk: Details are on our social media and website link But in short it’s back to the old pre pandemic routine - 2.20pm congregate at the police station, parade to St James The Less for laying of wreaths and 3pm service. During the service, the roads re-open. This is followed by a short parade back to the George just before 4pm where the parade falls out. The road closures are “rolling“, as the parade passes through which means only ten to fifteen minutes at any one place/time with the longest closure by the church for the laying of wreaths. The parade will pass through the village centre quite quickly, which means Whitchurch residents can come through from the bridge and turn right along station road towards Goring at the village hall or left towards Reading along the Reading Road. Coming from /to the Tidmarsh Road direction, they can go around the diversion/back ie via Green Lane /Pangbourne Hill and Upper Basildon if necessary . There will be marshals on all routes to stop traffic and advise but as I say, traffic will be held for 15-20 mins max at the church and shorter elsewhere.

Does anyone know whether access to (and exit from) the Stables Room opposite the Ferryboat will be possible from the toll bridge tomorrow (Friday) between 9:30 and 12:30? WoTjam (Whitchurch-on-Thames Jazz group) meets there on Friday mornings. If Thames Water's repairs continue tomorrow I assume access from the Whitchurch Hill end is a definite no-go.

Following the arbirtrary closure of Hardwick Road and the High Street this morning, I called SODC Highways to find out how long this situation would last. According to them, this has been done by Thames Water to fix an"emergency leak" situated between the Art Gallery and the Narrows. The closure is scheduled to last from 09:00 a.m. Thursday to 3:30 pm on Friday. I also complained in the strongest terms about the very uncouth and dictatorial behaviour of the employee of Shift Traffic Management Services who are apparently managing (ha!) the road closure for Thames Water. I explained that everyone understood that on occasions roads had to be closed but there was no need for his arrogant, rude and aggressive behaviour towards residents and road users who simply wanted to know what was going on.

Regrettably we have had to return our rescue dog, Krystal, to the Trust. I could not overcome her previous use as a guard dog, possibly tethered. She enjoyed her time with us, particularly the freedom but, perhaps, not the daily walking! So, once again, I need to search for a direct replacement for Molly. Please let me know if you know of a suitable Labrador requiring a happy home and some daily exercise!

Caroline, Thank you for your interest and offer of help in my locating another dog as a replacement for Molly. As you know we now have Sindy, an 8 years old chocolate coloured Labrador bitch, who is gradually being introduced to the village, the villagers, their dogs and our footpath network. She is very nervous and unused to the freedom now allowed - she is still likely to escape (usually the Village Green) but, as yet, is unused to traffic. Eric

4 Cars had their tyres slashed last night in Hardwick Road. There was also a reported incident of an intruder in a garden in the area at 01:20 where the police were quickly in attendance. If these two incidents are linked (theres no direct link at the moment but it is a coincidence) we should be very cautious approaching anyone causing criminal damage or loitering with possible intent. The plane on Monday 4th July was a single wing plane which I believe came from Blackbushe, and not the usual yellow biplane from White Waltham. I didn’t see the one yesterday (Tuesday 5th). If the Blackbushe plane comes back I’ll get on to them. If any clever photographer can take a time stamped picture of an aerobatic plane above us showing its number please email it to me and I’ll use it to approach the airport concerned.

We have had the catalytic converter stolen off our car whilst parked in a large car park at Legoland. Our garage said it had been sawn off at each end. Wise after the event we have had a lock fitted. If I had known about this type of theft, I would have fitted a lock. If you have a hybrid car it might be worth getting a lock and avoid an expensive bill - apparently hybrids are targeted.

Hi there, a bit of a long shot but would anyone be interested in two stainless steel kitchen worktops? Useful for kitchens, untility rooms, even garages as hardwearing work surfaces. Had 10 years of use so a good few swirl marks on the metal. More details and sizing below, email if interested! Both are MDF moisture resistant with strainless steel wrapped over. The longer side has two Blanco sinks in it which are welded in a smooth fitting with the surface and approx 40x40cm in depth and width. The shorts side has a hole cut for a hob (56cm wide previously for a 5ring hob). The central tap is also available if needed. Two two work surfaces are Height 4cm Depth 62cm Length 226cm and 218cm respectively

Thank you to all of those who brought delicious cakes and treats for the communal table at our Jubilee celebration on Sunday. I have a white round plate, a square plate, a Fortnum & Mason tin, an M&S biscuit tin, a blue-trimmed Sistema plastic tub and a silver cake knife that I have leftover from the table. Please email me at my Parish Clerk address or text or call me on 07876714906 so that I can return your items to you.

A huge Thank You to everyone who helped with the organisation, setting-up, decorations, and catering, for the village tea-party yesterday afternoon. The Parish Council, the School and the Pre-School Parents Association and many others all worked very hard to make it happen so that our lovely village community could enjoy a relaxed and sociable afternoon as a finale to the Platinum Jubilee. And it didn't rain either - perfect!

It was so great to see everyone from the community come together for the Jubilee tea on Sunday. This was the main objective from my perspective. I’d just like to thank a few key people who were instrumental in making this happen, especially our Clerk Jane Yamamoto who organised the event overall, which included securing the marquees from Hempen at Hardwick Estate along with James Norman. It was also great to have village newcomer Nicola Armstrong to coordinate the pre-school contributions. Also thanks to Cormac Neeson for giving us access to power at the pavilion. Rev James Leach and the church also encouraged parishioners to join. And finally, I thought that the Roy Bailey Big Band did an excellent job and helped make it a very festive and memorable event!

I’d also like to thank those involved in to making the Beacon Lighting on Thursday such a magical evening. This includes Sandra Parkinson who hosted the beacon on her property and helped build it along with Charles Cotgreave and other members of the Green Team including Sally, Peter, and Lorna Woolhouse, Gill Goodson, Geoff Weir and John Bradon. And of course a big thanks to Alistair Dunstan who made such a memorable performance on the bagpipes!

Hi Alistair. I have lost my keys - I last had them Thursday evening when I walked to the allotment via the green about 8pm to get some rhubarb. Elizabeth is on a plastic square key fob and it's three keys - a brass Chubb one, a grey metal Chubb type, and a small grey metal one. I'm hoping these are mine. Liz Robinson.
