I am looking to sell my road bike as we come into the spring riding season! It’s a Giant Avail 3, very lightly used for the last 10 years since its purchase. Aluminium frame, medium to large women’s size. Please email me with the link to this post if you or anyone you know is interested!

Good morning, does anybody know if ‘Theale Gas’ is still in business? I’ve tried phoning Jon numerous times, and he is not answering the phone or his messages. Does anyone know of another very good reliable plumber if all else fails? Many thanks - Gill

Can anyone point me to more details or a link regarding the Thames water work planned next week? I saw the post on this website about the high street work now starting on Monday 26th. And a few weeks ago I had a letter about the closure of Hardwick road by the mount from Wednesday 28th to Friday 1st… are they separate works? Are both going ahead next week? Many thanks!

Hello Alexa. Thames Water's closure of Hardwick Road near The Mount has been postponed by two months until 22 to 24 April. That info is now on the one.network website (there is a link on our Links page). They seem to have failed to advise nearby residents, who had received letters warning of a closure next week, of the postponement. The separate Thames Water work in the High Street (near the lower narrows), which involves traffic lights and delays, has been postponed twice recently, as our news item mentions, and is now supposed to start on Monday. Hope that helps - Richard Wingfield, News Editor.

Would anyone be interested in two guitars we are looking to give away. One is a 4 string electric black Hartke bass guitar, plus cable, stand and amp. Plug in and play. The second is a ¾ length 6 string acoustic guitar. Offered individually, or as a pair, both would be ideal for learning.

I am an occasional user of the toll bridge and notice that sometimes you collect funds for local charities there. I am Fundraising Mgr for Reading Family Aid which is a small charity which provides outings for disadvantaged families in the wider Reading area and organises the huge Toys and Teens Appeal that provides toys and gifts to around 3,000 children who would otherwise receive no Christmas presents. I was wondering if you would consider having a collecting bucket for us on your bridge? We are all volunteers so that almost all the money raised goes directly to putting smiles on children's faces. Thank you.

Some people may have received a notice from Thames Water yesterday about low water pressure in Pangbourne and parts of Reading. This didn't affect us as out water normally comes from Gatehampton near Goring. As part of this, some residents that have registered as vulnerable to water cuts may have recevied bottled water by mistake from Thames Water. I have 12 bottles of spring water that a resident doesn't need that anyone is welcome to if they want it.

I am trying to find new book club members for a U3A (university of the third age) group. We meet once a month on the 4th Monday at 2pm - the venue alternates between Whitchurch on Thames and Goring on Thames. A lift to and from the venues is available. The books are provided free of charge by the library service and are distributed at the meeting. You would be made very welcome with light refreshments. The group is informal and the books are varied but not too challenging. Do come and meet us - if you decide to continue there is a small charge to join the U3A. Please contact me if you would like to come along to the next meeting or would like more information.

Can anyone help with taking medical blister packs for recycling to Superdrug in Reading? There has been a great response to the recycling initiative mentioned in the Summer Bulletin. There is now a cardboard box in the phone box at the corner of Manor Road and the High Street for their collection. Blister packs cannot routinely be recycled, but can be by Terracycle by taking them to Superdrug. I have been taking them to Superdrug in Broad Street in Reading, where there is a collection point at the rear of the shop next to the pharmacy dispensing counter. However, this now needs doing every week or two and I don't have any regular need to go into Reading. Therefore if anyone else is able to take some, this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Dear Karen, Here are the details from the Pangbourne Parish Council. Their website has just been fixed: Remembrance Day Published: 30 October 2023 Pangbourne's annual Remembrance Day will take place on Sunday 12 November. The event will start as usual with the parade, which will leave from the police station on Reading Road at 2.20pm, led by the Pangbourne College band. This will be followed by the laying of wreaths at St James the Less, and a service at the church. A rolling road closure will be in place during the parade.

Whitchurch Hill Bridge: There have been no new bridge cards for over 3 weeks now, with no news on when they will arrive. In the meantime, I am a resident having to pay the 60p instead of 45p. I queried this with the bridge team and was told there was nothing they could do about that. Surely these bridge cards should be arriving by now. And in the absence, surely residents can still pay the reduced charge? I cross that bridge 6 times a day with work and school runs and I need the bridge card. Hoping the Bridge manager sees this please. thank you.

Hello Whitchurch! I'm an author writing a new book that includes (in a small part) my own memories of the small riding school that used to be in the village at a farm, run by Carmen James in the mid 1970s and 1980s. I enquired a a couple of years back, but am trying again, to see if I can find out more. I'm trying to find the farm and its name - does anyone remember it, or anything about it? Or know of the woman that lived at the farm (she had dalmations)? It was a lovely farm down a concrete track (which was a bridleway), with a walled stable yard, a big old barn and a lovely old farmhouse. I had some wonderful (hard-working) times there and would love to rediscover it - we knew it as 'The Babes.' But I don't know why! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can remember all the names of all the ponies, but none of the other details! Thank you. All best.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks were at The Ferryboat this morning. They’ve marked up where they need to excavate on the existing paved walkway to install a new power supply. They believe they can do this without a road closure by routing pedestrians between the “hole” and the front of the FB, but that decision will be for Oxfordshire County Council as Highways Authority. If they are allowed to do it without a road closure the work will take place within 6-8 weeks. If a road closure is required it’ll be at least 3 months. A new power supply is required for the refitted kitchen before The Ferryboat can re-open.

I had a few thoughts based on the key points from the radio interview with the Oak Taverns management posted on this site yesterday. Isn’t saying SODC have not banned the street food semantics? Oak taverns were asked to stop the street food trading by SODC and according to the dictionary “To ban something means to state officially that it must not be done, shown, or used” which is what they were told… Surely a face to face meeting between SODC and Oak Taverns is the way forwards, as has been requested by the company, to ensure the advice is given around licences relevant to their business model and so the situation is resolved promptly. I was also interested to hear in the radio interview that SODC are interpreting the 40 year old national legislation around licensing far more strictly that neighbouring councils. I can imagine 40 year old legislation was not written with todays world and the new and innovative business models being used these days in mind!

Statement from South Oxfordshire District Council regarding street trading outside licensed venues: You may have seen posts on social media this weekend claiming that South Oxfordshire District Council had banned street food trucks from operating at sites owned by Oak Taverns. This is NOT true; we have not banned street trading at their sites. Oak Taverns have not ensured that the permits required for street trading to take place legally at their sites in South Oxfordshire are in place. We have been in contact with them about this situation for a number of weeks with the aim of resolving this issue as quickly as possible. This issue concerns national legal requirements; we have provided them with guidance about this but at no point have we said that street trading was banned from taking place. We were therefore disappointed that Oak Taverns chose to post inaccurate information about this situation on social media and the resulting comments that we received from members of the public. Street trading consent is important as it helps to ensure public safety and that the venue is meeting its insurance requirements, as well as preventing nuisance or annoyance (for example from noise, litter and parking) to those in the area. Street trading makes a valuable contribution our local culture and economy. The services that street traders provide for residents and visitors are hugely important and we are doing all we can to support them and to ensure there are no unnecessary burdens placed on them to operate safely and successfully. We will continue to work with Oak Taverns with the aim of ensuring street trading can take place legally at their sites as soon as possible. By law, all locations where street trading takes place, including on private land, require a specific consent to allow this to happen if members of the public can access the site without paying an entry fee. This is a national requirement which applies to all venues across the country. Individual mobile traders are also required to hold street trading consent for all the sites they will operate from.

Along with many members of our community, I am very surprised at the decision from SODC Licensing team to ban Oak Taverns from serving any food at the Greyhound or any of their other pubs in the area until agreement can be reached on the appropriate licensing fees. Clearly SODC Licensing policies have been developed with good intentions to support small businesses and communities alike and need to be adhered to. The main issue is that SODC Licensing team's decision to stop all food service at very short notice before a clear way forward is agreed is unnecessarily damaging to the pubs, the food traders, and the community. My understanding is that all of these food traders are fully licensed and comply with the food hygiene and other relevant regulations. The issue that SODC seems to be raising is that the food traders are not paying the appropriate fees as mobile street traders. I have discussed this with the pub owner and they are committed to working with SODC and the food vendors to comply, but the situation is not at all straightforward and it will take some time and coordination and the process includes a 28 day consultation period. This issue is not strictly a Parish Council issue, but it clearly affects the community, especially as this is our only active pub, and I wanted to let you know that I am working on a personal level to see if there is anything I can do help resolve this as soon as possible. To that end, I am continuing to discuss this with Cllr Dragonetti, and have also raised this to the CEO of SODC as well as SODC’s Leader requesting a formal explanation for why such a drastic action needed to be taken without any real notice or constructive discussions. The action certainly doesn’t seem to be consistent with SODC’s previously stated support for community pubs and local business, especially during peak summer season with no warning. I have also raised the issue to our MP John Howell as this affects eight pubs in South Oxfordshire and I have heard that there is similar levels of outrage in Chinor and Wheatley that also have important Oak Tavern Pubs. John has also raised this to SODC CEO Mark Stone requesting that the matter be resolved quickly.

Hi everyone. Just to let you know that I share everyone's concerns about the situation at the Greyhoud. The pub has has been growing in importance as community hub since Lottie and Oak Taverns took over. I know the food trucks have been very popular and a big part of this success. At this point it is between SODC and Oak Taverns to work something out, but I have spoken to Lottie, the owner Simon, and SODC Cllr Dragonetti and will do whatever I can make sure we get a satisfactory outcome for the village.

I heard the very sad news that the food trucks at The Greyhound are under threat. I truly hope that this is not the case. Lottie and her team have created an environment that welcomes everyone, young and old. The Greyhound is once again the hub of the village and that is, in large part, due to the opportunity to pick up a bite to eat there. Can anyone please advise how we can petition South Oxfordshire to take our concerns into consideration? If the issue is an increase in litter, could we not simply add or allow the pub to add more bins to prevent resolve this? I really don’t want to lose our lovely pub, do you?

We only discovered this lovely pub and the excellent food truck last night. We thoroughly enjoyed the food (and the pub!) and were sorry to hear that there was an issue with the food truck's visiting. Everyone in the beer garden seemed to be enjoying the food too. Such an asset. We went for a walk around the village afterwards and didn't see any associated litter. I hope this valuable asset can be saved. It's nice to be able to support local ventures and young entrepreneurs.

To paraphrase Jay, this is total nonsense. There is absolutely no litter as a result of the street food. I don’t understand why one individual complaint can immediately have an impact without a proper investigation, and wonder about the motivation behind that complaint. Jim Donahue perhaps you could advise how to petition OCC on this? The revitalisation of the pub is probably the best thing that’s happened in the village in last 10yrs we’ve been here. I for one will make a concerted effort to drink more beer, with or without food.

Hi Peter. It is SODC Licensing that is investigating this, not OCC. The formal channel to raise concerns like this to SODC is via your elected SODC representative for the area, Peter Dragonetti. I know that he is a big supporter of community pubs and would be happy to hear your views.

Hello. May we please express, through your message board, our deepest condolences upon hearing the sad news that Tim, Whitchurch Lock Keeper, has passed away. We liked him very much & he always made us laugh with his great sense of humour & his stories. He was always so helpful & many of the other 'boaters' that we have chatted to over the years have said the same. He truly loved the area & the people where he lived, especially The Thames River & he knew so much about it & the wildlife. He was a true River man who could fix anything, especially if 'that thing' contained the word 'boat'!!. He will be a hard act to follow as sadly there aren't so many people nowadays with the same practical hands on skills & knowledge of the job like Tim possessed. We will remember him always. Sending our sincere sympathies to his family & to all who knew him. Kindest Regards, C&D.

I found two ticks on my dog last night. She’s only walked locally for the last two weeks and it’s the first time she’s picked up ticks in this area. These nasties can cause illness and seem to be spreading so do check your dogs and cats, and yourselves if you walk on the paths and trails around our beautiful village! If they have already bitten you don’t try to pull them off of cover with Vaseline, use a tick remover card or tick tweezers to minimise the risk of disease transmission.

Does anyone know the owner of a silver Smart car Reg AM09BNJ, which has been parked on the high street for more than one month, and has not moved? An online check indicates it has not been reported as stolen. It is quite awkward parked where it is, as our driveway is very narrow and needs a big swing to get our car into and out of it. If anyone would like a lift from the village to the Hardwick Lecture tomorrow evening, I’d be happy to.

I'm looking to move within the village and would love to hear from anyone wishing to rent out their 1+ bed property as I'm being forced to leave my current home. I'm a very keen gardener (and an aquatic designer by profession) so particularly keen for some outside space too. Many thanks. Nev.
