Regrettably we have had to return our rescue dog, Krystal, to the Trust. I could not overcome her previous use as a guard dog, possibly tethered. She enjoyed her time with us, particularly the freedom but, perhaps, not the daily walking! So, once again, I need to search for a direct replacement for Molly. Please let me know if you know of a suitable Labrador requiring a happy home and some daily exercise!

Would you kindly send details of the Memorial Event on the 14th August. My family lived in Combe Park with other displaced Poles, then moved on to Nettlebed and Checkendon. It is a subject very close to my heart, especially now as Ukrainians are suffering a similar fate in Gulags. Kind regards, Irenka (Sonning Common)

4 Cars had their tyres slashed last night in Hardwick Road. There was also a reported incident of an intruder in a garden in the area at 01:20 where the police were quickly in attendance. If these two incidents are linked (theres no direct link at the moment but it is a coincidence) we should be very cautious approaching anyone causing criminal damage or loitering with possible intent. If anyone has CCTV of suspicious individuals in the area from around midnight to 2am please let me or the police know.

Hello all, We are currently looking for a new home and viewed a property on Manor Rd last weekend. We were really charmed with the area but noticed on a map that there is a waste water treatment plant at the end of Manor Rd. Can any residents of the street share their experience with this? Does the smell from the plant reach the houses? Are there any other impacts? Thank you

The plane on Monday 4th July was a single wing plane which I believe came from Blackbushe, and not the usual yellow biplane from White Waltham. I didn’t see the one yesterday (Tuesday 5th). If the Blackbushe plane comes back I’ll get on to them. If any clever photographer can take a time stamped picture of an aerobatic plane above us showing its number please email it to me and I’ll use it to approach the airport concerned.

We have had the catalytic converter stolen off our car whilst parked in a large car park at Legoland. Our garage said it had been sawn off at each end. Wise after the event we have had a lock fitted. If I had known about this type of theft, I would have fitted a lock. If you have a hybrid car it might be worth getting a lock and avoid an expensive bill - apparently hybrids are targeted.

A huge Thank You to everyone who helped with the organisation, setting-up, decorations, and catering, for the village tea-party yesterday afternoon. The Parish Council, the School and the Pre-School Parents Association and many others all worked very hard to make it happen so that our lovely village community could enjoy a relaxed and sociable afternoon as a finale to the Platinum Jubilee. And it didn't rain either - perfect!

It was so great to see everyone from the community come together for the Jubilee tea on Sunday. This was the main objective from my perspective. I’d just like to thank a few key people who were instrumental in making this happen, especially our Clerk Jane Yamamoto who organised the event overall, which included securing the marquees from Hempen at Hardwick Estate along with James Norman. It was also great to have village newcomer Nicola Armstrong to coordinate the pre-school contributions. Also thanks to Cormac Neeson for giving us access to power at the pavilion. Rev James Leach and the church also encouraged parishioners to join. And finally, I thought that the Roy Bailey Big Band did an excellent job and helped make it a very festive and memorable event!

Hi folks. Has anyone moved to Airband FTTP since it was installed in Hardwick Road? What speeds are you getting? Is the service reliable? Have you had to use customer services (not just sales!), and are they helpful and efficient? Do they have a monopoly on Hardwick Road, and, if so, any idea when this runs out? I'm tempted by the idea of high speeds, but Airband has had terrible reviews (they have already cut us off twice for days on end with their clumsy cabling work), and I'm a very happy customer of Zen who doesn't want to change supplier. Very grateful for any info :)

I registered an interest in Airband on Hardwick Road, and just got this update: As part of our ongoing commitment to keep you informed of the progress of the ultrafast broadband network build in your area, we have another update for you. We are now working on our last round of civil works, aiming to complete building this network early in July, with installs following 4-6 weeks after that. As always, if you have questions feel free to ask them in a reply to this email. Best regards, The Airband Team

Saw a 'road closure' sign in Pangbourne earlier, and as best as I could read it as I drove by I think it said 'May 28 and 29'. Does anyone know more about these proposed works, e,g. full closure or delays, and precise location?

Hi Susanna, I understand that you pay £30 for the card, its already topped up with £20 worth of crossings. You buy it from the toll booth. The toll booth give you an envelope with a form to complete and return later and the topped up card is in the envelope. There are different types of card too, some for constant crossings. You would be best to speak to the toll booth staff, they are very helpful. Ive had a card for 17 years and its so much easier than the paper vouchers we used to buy. Hope this helps.

You need to buy it at the toll bridge. It’s £5 for the card (which you get back if you ever need to return it), then you top it up with £20 at a time which I believe now buys you 57 crossings or some similar slightly random number. The staff at the toll booth will be able to explain all

Cards can be purchased for £20 which are refundable. You will then need to top up £20. (£40) first purchase. £20 gives you 47 crossings. Payment is by cash or card. If you use it over 4x per day the rest of your crossings are free for that day only. Ask at the toll bridge for more information

Hi Susanna The bridge cards are £30 and purchased from the toll booth (cash or card) The card has 47 crossings on and there’s also a registration form to fill out after purchase - this ensures you don’t loose your crossings if you loose your bridge card We don’t do a monthly payment anymore but when your bridge card runs low you can top up at the toll booth for £20 and that gives you 47 crossings Using a bridge card is much easier, quicker and also cheaper. However we are currently out of stock but I’m waiting on a delivery Hope that answers all your questions but feel free to contact me if you need more info

Is anyone looking for support for an elderly relative? I would like to recommend a wonderful lady and experienced carer called Katy, who lives in Whitchurch. She used to visit my father 3 or 4 times a week and went above and beyond to offer all aspects of care and companionship, including personal care, housework, the washing and ironing, some cooking, taking him home-made treats, accompanying him to appointments, checking on his well-being with phone calls and emails and much more. She is now available to take on a similar role with a new client. If you would like to know more, please contact Katy direct on 07917 712158.

Is anyone else experiencing a massive drop in internet speed? I’m on Hardwick Road and saw phone engineers working down a manhole opposite on Friday. While they were there the internet dropped out and when it came back on our speeds had plummeted from 40mpps (which we’ve had consistently for years) to 5mpps. My supplier (Zen) says it dropped on 6 April (Weds) - were the engineers fixing a previously reported fault, or have they caused it? Is anyone experiencing the same crash, and is it Airband doing the work again? Seems a bit of a coincidence.

In addition to the speed, its very spotty, continuously dropping out. Makes for interesting zoom calls, but is getting more stable as of yesterday. As a rule of thumb when I see a engineer at the green box opposite the greyhound, I pencil in 3 days of poor performance.

Hello, Is anyone else in the village part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme? We are hoping to welcome a young couple to our house in the next few weeks if our sponsorship application is successful. Although their English is good it might be nice to have a network of other Ukrainians in the area. Also before I head to IKEA I did wonder if anyone might have a few items we could borrow to help make their stay a bit more comfortable - ideally looking for a chest of drawers, small desk and some kitchen items (e.g. saucepans, crockery etc). Thanks so much, Becky & Andrew Galea

Yes, same here. Airband seems to think this is only BT customers, but I'm with Zen. I spoke to their team today (can't recommend Zen highly enough), and they also reported it to BT. Openreach says that they will fix it by the 21st (!!). Zen's guess was that they'd be out tomorrow afternoon or Saturday morning. Not a great PR exercise for Airband, but I had already read terrible reviews, so wasn't tempted to move from Zen! This is Zen's reply: Good Afternoon Kate, A fault has been detected outside your property as such I have raised a fault to our suppliers. At this time, Openreach do not require access to your premises but if a site visit is required, we will contact you to confirm internal checks have been completed and to book an appointment that is suitable for you. On rare occasions Openreach may ask for permission to access your property as a part of the initial outside work but unless an appointment has been booked via ourselves you are not required to be at the premises for an engineer visit. Openreach is indicating to us that they expect to have an update on your fault by 21/03/22 23:59:59 Time scales are not guaranteed and may be delayed due to factors beyond our control. We will check daily for updates and be in touch when they are available via email, telephone or SMS. You should not normally need to do anything to progress this fault unless we request additional testing or information from you but, if you need to contact us, you may do so by way of reply to this email or by calling 01706 902001. Kind Regards,

Does anyone know the location of a house called Clematis Cottage on Hardwick Road? It was there in the 1920s and 30s but may have been renamed. Perhaps it was near to Hardwick House, as the resident in 1929 was a gardener called George Lewington?

Update: Clematis Cottage was the right hand side of what is now a single dwelling, Walnut Cottage, on Hardwick Road, formed of two cottages. The 1939 Register shows that Rosemary, Myrtle, Walnut and Clematis Cottages went from west to east along Hardwick Road. The occupier of Clematis Cottage from 1927 - 1932 was George Lewington (1883 - 1950) with his wife Ellen Louisa). George was a gardener but had been a Sergeant Major in the RAMC during WW1. He had also served in the Boer War. George Lewington was my grandfather.

Hi, It appears the Fibre to the premises is now finally coming to the village. Broadband provider Airband are the ones doing the wok on Hardwick Road this week. They are clearing a blocked BT cable conduit so that they can add their own fibres. Richard mentioned in his article that you can express interest to them directly now: An Airband representative has suggested to us that any local resident interested in being connected to the new service, with speeds up to 900 Mbps, should visit the Airband website and enter their postcode to see the options and the costs. Alternatively, call them on 01905 676 121.

Thanks Jim. After today's shenanigans, I don't think many of us would be too keen to use AiirHead services... Can we only use Airband with the FTTP, or can we use any fibre provider? Am feeling a bit gutted about this, as I would love to have had FTTP, but there's no way I'll use this company as my provider!

Talking to the Airband Area Manager, they are planning to offer FTTP only for Hardwick Road, the High Street, and Hartslock Bridleway for now. Hartslock seems to be covered by a Rural Oxfordshire scheme. I'm checking with OCC to see what else they have planned for the village. Airband say that they could offer residents broadband service via their fibre for other service providers such as TalkTalk if requested, but Airband would need to make arrangements with those service providers so this probably would not be available initially. The work Airband is doing doesn't prevent other FTTP providers to add fibre to village streets in the future, but this is just the first one doing it in conjunction with OCC. Airband pays BT OpenReach to lease space in their under road conduits and telephone poles. Others could do it if they saw it as economically viable.

Does anyone know the situation with fibre broadband in the village? I know it’s fibre to the box in Hardwick Road, but does the new ‘full fibre’ work by Airband mean that we are now going fibre to the property? Does this mean the road will be dug up again to give fibre access to each house, and also does it mean that we are locked in to Airband, which has received terrible reviews from customers? Any info appreciated :)

My understanding is that there are no current plans from any of the main providers to provide full fibre to the premises (FTTP) in the village. Airband have been in Whitchurch Hill for a while I think, and I think they will provide their Fixed Wireless Broadband solution, which needs a receiver on the house and not cabling. It looks like this will be >250mb download which is a huge improvement on the current speeds, but yes, I think we are locked in to this, or the fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) solutions we currently have. Others can correct me as I don’t have any recent information.

I am an ex resident of Whitchurch and have noticed the parking in the High street and in Manor road has got worse since the bridge was dismantled for repair. Surely the best way to deal with this problem would to have a 2 hour time limit on parking. This would stop people parking all day and catching the train, this would also allow people to use the village pubs and to walk across the bridge to do some shopping.

What's the difference between someone parking all day and lots of people parking in 2hr shifts? It doesn't address anything.

Dave, lots. If you have someone parking all day the slot is used all day, if you have a 2 hr max park time, the slot may be parked in all day, but generally there will be times of the day when it is not, hence less parking hours in any given day. It really changes the type of parker, from long (and short) stayers to just short stayers. Someone could today park in the high street and leave the car there for 2 weeks, that is allowed, but probably not what we would want to encourage. What the 2hr slot solution would not address is locals who want to park near their houses, which is a separate but closely related topic.

Hi Roy, our Traffic and Parking Working Group is indeed looking at Residents parking options including a 2 hour time limit on parking option. They are having an open session on Thursday evening the 24th Feb where they would be happy to discuss this with you. You can also contact Diana Smith or another member of TAPWG directly.

Good Evening, I am writing to ask if anyone knows of any RENTAL properties coming on the a market locally? I had to move in with my parents up by Manor Road a few months ago after having a year of problems arising from Covid which has been quite nice in a way but we now need something for ourselves. I've said this because my daughter is settled and loving Whitchurch Preschool and she is enrolled for Whitchurch Primary. I don't wish to unsettle again by renting a place out of the ability to walk her to Preschool. Which leaves me with a very limited area and not many come on in our budget . I missed out on 1 rental today I put an offer on and then the two I was going to view have also gone before I even got a chance to view then. So we are ideally looking for a 2 bedroom but due to being close to my parents we are also looking at 1 bedrooms places as we have rooms at my parents if we need to. So I would really appreciate letting me know if you are ending your rent or know of any that are coming up so I can get hot to trot. Thank you in advance, All my best, Tori & Amelie

It was sad to hear the news of Nigel Grove passing. Nigel was a Parish Councillor for many years and during this time he worked hard to improve the facilities of the village which we now benefit from. He was particularly involved in the village hall and began the refurbishment which is still progressing. He was a very sociable individual who always had time for people and would do his utmost to rectify any problems. In essence he was an integral part of Whitchurch on Thames life and we should feel fortunate to have had him living in our midst quietly getting on with supporting the community.

One of the most powerful British steam locomotives ever built, 46233 Duchess of Sutherland, is due to steam through Pangbourne platform 1 (towards Didcot) with a charter special at about 0907 hrs on Tuesday 23rd November. Best place to se it is probably the Didcot end of platform 2, but remember to stay on the platform behind the yellow line.

A news item on the Pangbourne Parish Council website states that there will be no Remembrance Sunday parade in Pangbourne this year, only an outdoor service at St James' Church at 3 pm. So there will be no road closures in Pangbourne. Here in Whitchurch there will be a short Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial, for which the hill is closed to traffic from 10.45 to 11.00 am

They say they have found a loose connection and that the power is likely to go off within the next hour and may remain off for about an hour while they fix it.

We have - for the 35 years that we have lived in Whitchurch - ordered our firewood from Hardwick Estate and have been very satisfied with the logs and pleased to support a local supplier. If you give the Hardwick estate office a ring you can place your order with any requirements for size of logs.

Hello - has anyone seen a St Helen & St Katharine school art folder that was left on the bench in Pangbourne where the school bus departs (the bus stop opposite Dudley Singleton). My daughter accidentally left it there on Thursday morning (9 September) around 0730. Please get in touch on 07900 566098 if you can help. Thank you.

I have livestock locally and would ask people to contact me if they are going to let of fireworks so I can make sure that the livestock are locked inside as it is unlawful to let them off near livestock, but I am happy just to put the livestock away whilst the fireworks are being let off
